Hanging on the edge in Mumbai

The trains in Mumbai don't have doors. Anyone can stick out their limbs and hop on or off a car at any time. Trains will get so full during rush hour that passengers need to hang out the sides. Of course, this is incredibly dangerous and openly invites "life-changing injuries".

The thing is, people like to hang out the sides anyway. Some will stand at the edge of the car even when it's empty. They could each have their own practical reasons for this risky behavior, but there's a unanimously simple explanation: The edge is more fun.

There you can watch the city scroll by without a window framing your view. You can feel the air rush past and cool off from the 110° heat. You can jump from the train like a stowaway hobo as it slows into the station. It's an opportunity to experience danger and stay perfectly safe, so long as you don't do anything stupid—though that's always the tricky part.
