Bodrum, Selçuk & Izmir, Turkey: Seeing what remains
Bodrum
A small seaside town housing the remains of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
Selçuk
Home of the Temple of Artemis and near the ancient city of Ephesus.
Izmir
A larger city by the sea.
I visited Bodrum and Selçuk to see the ruins of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the Temple of Artemis. Little remains of these Wonders of the Ancient World.
The Mausoleum is an easily missed attraction. Most Bodrum visitors are there for seaside simplicities, not fallen columns. No surprise, as there's little to see beyond the foundation and scattered stones. Anything characteristic from the ruins is held in the British Museum, along with other transported treasures.
Even less is left of the Temple of Artemis. It's now a small swamp, with a lone column standing as the structure's final memento. Cranes have nested atop the column. While these creatures are surely unaware of the symbolism, their message is clear: Life goes on.
